Windows XP Service Pack 3 Released to Manufacturing
Today we are happy to announce that Windows XP Service Pack 3 (SP3) has released to manufacturing (RTM). Windows XP SP3 bits are now working their way through our manufacturing channels to be available to OEM and Enterprise customers.
We are also in the final stages of preparing for release to the web (i.e. you!) on April 29th, via Windows Update and the Microsoft Download Center. Online documentation for Windows XP SP3, such as Microsoft Knowledge Base articles and the Microsoft TechNet Windows XP TechCenter, will be updated then. For customers who use Windows XP at home, Windows XP SP3 Automatic Update distribution for users at home will begin in early summer.
Thanks to everyone here who installed the public betas – you not only gave us detailed feedback but also helped each other out with timely troubleshooting. Through the beta program we found several important issues and were able to confirm some essential fixes. We couldn’t have done this without you.
We will still be monitoring this forum during the next few weeks in case you have more feedback about the release of Windows XP SP3.
On behalf of myself, Shashank Bansal and Windows Serviceability, many thanks.

Just an FYI. Here’s my summary of the new Service Pack install on a few of my systems.
Over the weekend I applied the service pack to 12 of my test PCs, all with different configurations and settings. Sadly, only 2 out of the 12 went through without errors :-(.
If you're thinking of starting the install and walking away expecting it to be completed before you get back, don't push your luck. You will need to sit by the PC and watch the install process. I am not sure of what, where and why but there were various errors that required clicking ok, ok, ok, ok, ok, you get the drift. When installing, do not cancel when you get the various errors. I believe they are as a result of the changes made to them by the SP that requires a reboot before being properly initialized. Just keep hitting OK to the end. On some systems I stopped counting after 30 consecutive OKs.
The errors varied from services, memory and some other processes. After all the error notices and alerts, the install completed and system rebooted back into windows without any noticeable changes/problems.
As for apps, all seems well so far. I will have to delve a little deeper into them later but as long as my email works i'm good to go for now. The system performance is better and feels lighter which is a well needed add-on for the OS.
As for memory, comparing the before and after the SP install, the systems (even the oldest) runs much faster and with 200mb less memory usage. My oldest test box is a PIII 533Mhz with 512MB of RAM running a full line up of applications suites, security solutions and general apps. From this configuration it is safe to say that older systems should see much better performance from this SP.
Everything else looks normal. I'll get into the security aspects during this week. So far non of the Anti-Virus or Anti-Spyware solutions were affected by the new code.
Thank you,
~Brett A. Scudder~
